Those of you who have been following me for the past two weeks(on periscope) you may remember that Shark Sighting sign I posted. On 9/18/16 there was a melon head whale that had lost its mother. For 5 days it swam in circles in the shallows. There was a team from Hawaii Pacific University (Marine Biology) to monitor the whale. Their role was to observe and assist if it decided to strand itself. On 9/23/16 the inevitable happened. They euthanized it. Today was the memorial service. There were approximately 40 people there including a news team from KITV news.
Prior to that I did my usual “daily swim” at Kalama Beach. The water was clear. The waves were very nice… and the waves actually had some power. (nothing like sandys) at the 15 minute mark of my broadcast… for the 32nd time… I got stung by a Portuguese Man o War. It wasnt that bad as I pulled away from it very quickly. To debunk that myth that urine works… It doesn’t. You have to apply vinegar or meat tenderizer to neutralize the venom. If that’s not available rub sand (to remove the barbs) and rinse off. the sting should last no longer than 15-30 mins.
Swimming at Kalamas is my salt water therapy. I have been coming here over 20 years. And every time I enter that water its like a jacuzzi for me. When I did my usual broadcast and seen the whale(on 9/18)… The climate of my broadcast changed a little. I think the Periscope community was definitely moved by this unique display of nature. Unfortunately nature took its course and the whale left this earth way too early. The ceremony was very much so distinctly Hawaiian. Kumu Hula Mapoana DeSilva did the blessing. Immediately following they spread the whales ashes in the ocean.
(those that missed the live broadcast you can watch the replays in my Periscope channel)
